SAVANNAH, Ga. — Despite the ongoing government shutdown, federal employees at Savannah-Hilton Head Airport continue to report for duty each day. In response, the Savannah Area Chamber of Commerce and the Savannah Economic Development Authority (SEDA) are reaching out to the community for support. They are encouraging locals to assist the numerous federal workers who are currently unpaid.

Since the beginning of October, over 225 federal employees have been diligently maintaining operations at Savannah’s airport, ensuring safety and efficiency without receiving their salaries. This dedicated group includes TSA agents, FAA personnel, air traffic controllers, and Customs officers.

The Chamber and SEDA are urging local businesses and residents to contribute by donating items like gas or Uber gift cards, boxed lunches, or financial assistance. Monetary contributions are being managed by the United Way, which will directly aid those in need. Officials emphasize that these employees are integral members of the community, providing critical services amid uncertain times. The initiative aims to prevent anyone from falling behind as they continue their essential work.

“These are our friends and neighbors, caught in a political dispute they had no role in,” stated Bert Brantley, President & CEO of The Savannah Area Chamber of Commerce. “Many are still showing up to keep the city running, whether at the airport or the ports, hoping for the best.”

Officials want to clarify that this support initiative extends beyond the airport, encompassing all federal workers in the region affected by the shutdown.
