A Michigan resident, facing allegations of sexually abusing three young girls she used to babysit, made a court appearance on Monday.
Authorities have charged Gaila Bennett, 63, with the sexual abuse of three sisters at her residence in Lee Township, spanning from 2013 to 2020. The case came to light when, on October 5, the girls’ mother alerted the police about the alleged abuse that took place when her daughters were under 13 years of age, as reported by MLive.com.
The sisters, who are now 17, 15, and 14, reportedly accused Bennett of sexual assault, including incidents where she allegedly molested them in the shower. One sister detailed the abuse as occurring daily, beginning when she was in kindergarten, according to reports from MLive.com.
As per the Midland Daily News, Bennett is also accused of administering drugs to the victims and capturing images of the assaults. The girls described the drug as a “syrup” that induced drowsiness.
One of the sisters recounted that Bennett would hit her hands with objects if she resisted. If she cried, Bennett allegedly confined her in a basement workshop until her parents came to pick her up, police reports indicate.
Bennett, who was arraigned on Monday, is charged with first- and second-degree criminal sexual contact with a victim younger than 13 and assault with intent to commit sexual penetration. Her bond was set at $5 million.
