In the heart of Chicago’s Little Village, tensions reached a boiling point on Thursday as a confrontation unfolded between a crowd and federal agents, culminating in the arrest of one individual. Meanwhile, local authorities reported the detainment of several high school students amidst an intensifying wave of federal enforcement actions.

Chopper 7 was over 26th and Sacramento on Thursday at about 11 a.m.

According to the Chicago police, the incident began around 10:15 a.m. when a flurry of 911 calls flooded in, including one from federal agents, directing officers to the intersection of 26th Street and Whipple Street. The scene quickly escalated as a large assembly of people gathered, surrounding federal agents who were stationed inside an SUV.

Eyewitness accounts, captured from above by Chopper 7, depicted a chaotic scene. One individual was observed opening the door of a moving vehicle, while another hurled an object at the agents. These actions underscored the heightened emotions and unrest in the area as federal immigration enforcement operations continue to ramp up.

Chicago police said they were at the scene to “maintain public safety through crowd control and traffic control.”

One person was arrested by CPD for battering a police officer. Charges were pending.

It was not immediately clear if federal agents were conducting an operation in the area.

The office of Chicago Alderman Byron Sigcho-Lopez said multiple high school students and U.S. citizens were detained by federal agents Thursday morning, as well.

Sigcho-Lopez’s office said U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement was involved.

There are press conferences planned to give more information Thursday afternoon.

One will be held outside Benito Juarez High School in Pilsen.
