FULLERTON, Calif. (KTLA) — Tragedy struck a local softball team as four of its members were discovered deceased in a Fullerton apartment, suspected victims of drug overdoses, a teammate shared with KTLA.
The Fullerton Police Department responded to the scene at an apartment complex located in the 140 block of Wilshire Avenue shortly after 11 a.m. on Tuesday.
“A male caller contacted the Fullerton Police Department’s Communication Center via 9-1-1, reporting that four of his friends had overdosed and were unresponsive,” police detailed in a release.
First responders, upon arrival, confirmed the grim discovery of four adults who had passed away inside the apartment.
Although the exact cause of death has not been officially confirmed, authorities noted there is no danger to the surrounding community. Initial findings suggest that a drug overdose could be the reason behind the fatalities.
A friend of the teammates told KTLA on Tuesday night that all of them were on the same softball team and had come to the apartment to hang out with another teammate when the tragedy occurred.
Some of their loved ones were seen crying when detectives informed them of the news. Area residents, including one man who brought his family to the city’s bustling downtown for a night out, called the news “disturbing.”
“Usually downtown Fullerton is a safe environment, with families coming out here for happy hour that’s the reason why we were out here,” said William Gomez. “To hear news like this in our community. … It’s disturbing.”
None of the four people who died had been publicly identified as of Wednesday morning.
