SAVANNAH, Ga. — Excitement is building as Savannah State prepares for its homecoming game on October 25 at Wright Stadium, with a fresh face set to lead the team.

Head coach Aaron Kelton has announced exclusively that RaShawn Truell, a true freshman and former New Hampstead standout, will be taking on the role of starting quarterback. Coach Kelton expressed confidence in Truell’s abilities, stating that it was the right moment to “hand over the reins” in hopes of energizing the team’s offensive play.

In their recent outing, Savannah State fell to Fort Valley State, losing 7-0 during the Good Trouble Heritage Football Classic in Augusta, Ga. Interestingly, Savannah State’s defense held strong, not conceding any offensive points, with the lone touchdown scored on a punt return.

During that game, the team rotated through three quarterbacks, including Truell, Fabian Walker, and Christian Burks, but none managed to pass for more than 30 yards, indicating a collective struggle.

Truell has previously gained experience playing against South Carolina State on October 4, adding to his readiness for the upcoming challenge.

“He’s just getting better each week,” Kelton said. “You know, we were trying to find the spark that we need in the offense and in the pass game. We’re going to give him an opportunity. He’s a gamer. He’s a good player. It’s time for him to play. No question.”

Savannah State can pull its overall record to 4-4 and conference record to 3-3 with a win against Morehouse on Saturday.
