PINSON, Ala. (TRIBUNE) — Unauthorized entry onto Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) land is believed to have played a significant role in the fatal shooting at a bonfire event in Pinson on Sunday morning, according to official statements.

ALDOT issued a statement expressing condolences to the victims and their families, describing the event as a “tragedy.” The agency confirmed its full cooperation with ongoing investigations. ALDOT highlighted that the property in question, under its ownership for nearly ten years, has been clearly designated as restricted access.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the victims and their families in light of Sunday morning’s tragic events,” the statement declared. “This property has been clearly marked with No Trespassing signs, concrete barriers, and fencing for several years. Any access occurring is illegal and conducted by circumventing these preventative measures.”

Despite ALDOT’s efforts to secure the area, which it has owned for nearly a decade, local residents report that the site has frequently been used for off-roading and nighttime social gatherings.

The department says ALDOT was never notified of any illegal activity on the site prior to the shooting. Officials also confirmed that additional security steps have now been taken to prevent further unauthorized entry.

“ALDOT was never made aware of any illegal activity on the site. ALDOT is cooperating with investigators as they gather information that is likely to result in multiple criminal charges, and we will continue working with local law enforcement to address the issue of unlawful trespassing on state property,” the agency stated.

The shooting remains under investigation.
