Tampa Bay, Florida boasts the largest open water estuary in the state, a natural treasure that the local non-profit organization, Tampa Bay Waterkeeper, is fervently working to preserve. Their mission is to safeguard this vital watershed, ensuring its enjoyment for generations to come.

This year, Amanda had the privilege of participating in the Gasparilla Bowl Inshore Fishing Tournament, an event whose proceeds support the organization’s efforts. The Executive Director of Tampa Bay Waterkeeper, Justin Tramble, highlighted the area’s beauty, stating, “We get to live in one of the prettiest places in the world, with this beautiful estuary right in our backyard.” He emphasized that the organization is committed to upholding high standards in protecting it.

Tampa Bay Waterkeeper is dedicated to maintaining fishable, swimmable, and drinkable water for the over 2.7 million residents in Hillsborough and Pinellas Counties. The funds raised at the Gasparilla Bowl fishing tournament play a crucial role in advancing their mission. These funds support initiatives such as community outreach events, holding polluters accountable, conducting water quality testing, and advocating for the watershed’s protection.

Tramble also pointed out the significant economic impact tied to the watershed’s health, noting that “one in ten jobs are impacted by the health of the watershed.” He stressed that beyond the passion for protecting the environment, investing in infrastructure and continuing the fight for its preservation is clearly beneficial for the economy.

Tramble said, “one in ten jobs are impacted by the health of the watershed and if you set passion aside and think about the economic impact, its a no brainer that we need invest in infrastructure and continue fighting to protect it.”
