A Texas woman has been taken into custody following her hospitalization after allegedly attempting to drown her three children in a pond near their home.
The Liberty County Sheriff’s Office announced that 39-year-old Jessica Quintana faces two counts of injury to a child and one count of aggravated assault causing bodily injury. These charges were filed after her discharge from the hospital on Friday. The incident, involving her children aged 6, 11, and 15, took place on September 29. Fortunately, all the children survived and are now under the care of child protective services, as confirmed by authorities.
Previously reported by Law&Crime, the children’s father, Domingo Quintana, alerted emergency services claiming his wife had poisoned the children with NyQuil and tried to drown them in a pond. According to local NBC station KPRC, he also alleged the NyQuil was mixed with vodka. He managed to rescue his 11-year-old daughter from the water, and she was hospitalized in critical condition.
Although authorities have yet to confirm the presence of NyQuil in the children’s systems, they have ruled out the involvement of alcohol. Capt. David Meyers from the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office mentioned to KPRC that it is believed Jessica Quintana intended harm when she took her children to the water.
Jessica Quintana underwent a mental health evaluation during her hospital stay, as per KPRC’s report, though the results have not been disclosed publicly.
Domingo Quintana was arrested after the alleged incident, on Oct. 1, on animal cruelty charges after sheriff’s deputies said they found a “cat being kept in unsanitary and unsafe conditions inside the home.” Domingo Quintana posted $5,000 bond and was released.
Law&Crime’s Chris Stewart reported that during a child custody hearing after the Sept. 29 incident, the children all reportedly reacted “negatively” to the prospect of staying with their father. Domingo Quintana was subsequently barred from seeing his children. The Liberty County Sheriff’s Office stated on Friday that “it is not confirmed whether the father of the children will be facing any charges.”
Jessica Quintana is now in custody at the Liberty County Jail, where she is being held without bond.
