Storm Team 3: Quiet pattern continues into the weekend, showers return next week

SAVANNAH, Ga. () – Saturday promises to be a delightful day with plenty of sunshine gracing the skies. Following a brisk morning, temperatures are set to rise to the mid-70s by afternoon. Although it might be breezy and slightly chilly at times, the sunshine will make the day enjoyable. However, due to low humidity, breezy conditions, and ongoing drought, there’s an increased risk of fire today.

As we move into Sunday, expect clouds to gradually gather, but temperatures will still peak in the low to mid-70s. An approaching weather system from the west is likely to bring a chance of isolated showers late in the afternoon and into the evening.

Monday brings scattered rain, transitioning into intermittent showers through Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday as this sluggish system makes its presence felt. Expect cooler temperatures with highs around 70 on Monday, before dipping into the mid to upper 60s midweek.

By Friday, the persistent system will finally depart, allowing the sun to return and brighten the end of the week. You’ll want to keep your jackets and umbrellas close, as the cooler and damp conditions linger before we clear up for a sunnier finish to the week.

Tropical Storm Melissa is slowly churning through the central Caribbean Sea and is expected to strengthen into a hurricane soon. The warm ocean waters and low wind shear could allow it to rapidly intensify into a major hurricane (Category 3 or higher) over the weekend. Melissa’s slow movement makes it especially dangerous, as it could dump torrential rain, up to 35 inches (about 89 cm) on Jamaica, Haiti, and the Dominican Republic, leading to severe flooding and landslides in mountainous regions. The storm is forecast to drift toward Jamaica before turning gradually toward eastern Cuba and the Bahamas early next week. The U.S. is out of the threat zone as Melissa makes that northward turn and heads up to Bermuda after moving through the Bahamas.
