Hormel Foods has taken the proactive step of recalling a significant amount of its frozen chicken products following several alarming reports from customers who discovered metal fragments in the food.

On Saturday, the company announced the voluntary recall of over 4.8 million pounds of ready-to-eat frozen chicken items. This decision was made after multiple consumers alerted Hormel Foods about the presence of metal in their meals.

The recall, which was officially issued on October 25, affects chicken breast and thigh products distributed nationwide to HRI Commercial Food Service locations. The distribution period for these products was between February 10 and September 19.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service has provided guidance on identifying the affected products. Each package will have the establishment number “P-223” printed inside the USDA mark of inspection.

While these recalled items are not typically found in regular consumer freezers, they may be stocked in the freezers of hotels, restaurants, and similar businesses. Owners of such establishments are strongly advised to dispose of these products immediately.

  • 13.9-lb. cases – “Hormel fire braised meats all natural boneless chicken thigh meat,” with item code “65009” printed on the label.

  • 13.95-lb. cases – “boneless chicken breast with rib meat,” with item code “134394” printed on the label.

An investigation found the metal came from a conveyer belt during production, according to the recall. The recall did not state what type of metal was in the product or how it got into the chicken.

No injuries have been reported as part of this recall. Health experts encourage those concerned about an injury to contact their healthcare provider.

Consumers with questions about the recall may contact Hormel Foods Customer Relations through their website or by calling 1-800-523-4635.
