Arlene Phillips, a celebrated figure in the realm of “Strictly Come Dancing,” has long been associated with the show’s glittering allure. However, her path from a modest upbringing to becoming a household name in showbiz was anything but glamorous. At 82, Arlene’s journey began early in life, eventually leading her to the dance floor and a spot as a judge on the inaugural season of “Strictly Come Dancing,” which debuted 21 years ago.

Her rise to fame, as Arlene recounts, was fueled by the determination instilled in her during her formative years, which were marked by economic hardships. Speaking at the Women of the Year Awards, Arlene shared with Express.co.uk: “This event is profoundly meaningful to me, as it celebrates extraordinary women who are forging their legacy.” Reflecting on her own legacy, she said, “I often marvel at how a girl from a very humble background in Manchester could dare to dream of the life I’ve led. I’ve always sought opportunities, and I believe my upbringing was the driving force behind my resolve.”

Arlene also opened up about a significant personal loss during her teenage years that further ignited her focus and determination. She recalled, “Losing my mother at 15 was a pivotal moment. It forced me to confront questions about my future and how to navigate adulthood. However, I realized the importance of looking forward and not dwelling on the past.”

After her mother passed away, Arlene stayed in her family home, receiving a grant from the local council that enabled her to continue her dance studies in Manchester, eventually becoming a dance teacher herself.

Her ambitions led her to London in her early twenties, where she quickly established herself as a prominent dance instructor. Arlene founded the dance troupe Hot Gossip, which enjoyed great success and propelled her to become a sought-after choreographer. Her talents were later showcased in music videos for iconic artists such as Whitney Houston and Elton John.

She later become a judge on BBC’s So You Think You Can Dance, before taking on a major role in the original line-up of Strictly in 2004.

When the show first launched, Arlene was joined by her fellow hosts Bruno Tonioli, Craig Revel Horwood and, of course, the legend that was Len Goodman.

At the time the show was hosted by Bruce Forsyth and Tess Daly, and quickly became a family-favourite Saturday night show that had millions of viewers tuning in every week.

Arlene left the show in 2009 after her contract was not renewed by the BBC, she was replaced at the time by former winner Alesha Dixon.

Since leaving the show she has continued to choreograph performances including musicals such as The Wizard of Oz in 2011; she also appeared on I’m A Celebrity and appeared as a guest judge on Dancing on Ice in 2022.
