LOS ANGELES (AP) — The cinematic debut of “Chainsaw Man,” a popular anime, has surged ahead of a Bruce Springsteen biopic and the horror sequel “Black Phone 2” to clinch the top spot at the North American box office.

This victory marks another triumph for anime films, coming just weeks after “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – Infinity Castle” opened with an impressive $70 million, setting a new record for anime releases in theaters.

Raking in $17.25 million over the weekend across the U.S. and Canada, “Chainsaw Man — The Movie: Reze Arc” secured its No. 1 position, as reported by Comscore. Meanwhile, “Black Phone 2” settled into the second spot, garnering $13 million in its sophomore week.

Newcomers to the box office, the romantic comedy “Regretting You” and the biographical film “Springsteen — Deliver Me From Nowhere,” the first feature about the iconic musician, earned $12.85 million and $9.1 million, respectively. “Tron: Ares” completed the top five with a $4.9 million take, according to estimates from Comscore.

“Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc” offers a standalone narrative drawn from the beloved manga series. It follows a demon hunter whose limbs and head can transform into chainsaws, blending elements of romance and thrilling action. This film is derived from the manga by Tatsuki Fujimoto, which was adapted into an anime series in 2022.

It’s another win for Sony-owned Crunchyroll, which also released “Infinity Castle” last month.

Globally, “Chainsaw Man” has earned an estimated $108,000 so far.

“Deliver Me From Nowhere” stars Jeremy Allen White as Bruce Springsteen, focusing on the Boss’ struggles while creating his “Nebraska” album, released in 1982. White had to learn to play the guitar and had little singing experience before taking on playing Springsteen, who was involved in the production.

The film earned a B+ score on Cinemascore, while “Chainsaw Man” scored an A from audiences.

“Black Phone 2” stars Ethan Hawke and Mason Thames in the sequel to hit 2021 original. It’s now earned nearly $50 million domestically and more than $80 million worldwide.

“Regretting You,” a tragicomedy starring Dave Franco, Alison Williams, Scott Eastwood and Thames, is the latest adaptation of a Colleen Hoover novel.
