In a tragic turn of events, Lieutenant Gordan Gwathney of the Knoxville Police Department lost his life in a drowning incident during a hunting expedition on Sunday morning, according to a statement from KPD.

The 57-year-old Gwathney passed away in Woodworth, North Dakota. Originally from Sevier County, he embarked on his career with the Knoxville Police in 1997 and was elevated to the rank of Lieutenant in 2010.

“Our agency and the Knoxville community are reeling from this unimaginable loss,” expressed Chief of Police Paul Noel. “Gordon was cherished by both our department and numerous community members. He stood out as an exceptional officer, guiding countless officers throughout his career, dedicating his life to service, and exemplifying the essence of community policing. His absence leaves us heartbroken, and we urge the community to keep his family, our department, and all who knew and loved Gordon in their thoughts and prayers.”

Gwathney was honored as KPD’s Officer of the Year in 2013 and received another nomination for the accolade in 2019. Prior to his tenure with KPD, he served in the U.S. Army.

Mayor Indya Kincannon remarked, “Gordon Gwathney will forever be remembered as ‘Officer G’, the approachable and compassionate officer who genuinely connected with those he vowed to protect. His dedication to listening and building trust within the community was remarkable. As we mourn his sudden passing, our thoughts are with his family, friends, and colleagues.”

KPD thanked the agencies in North Dakota who responded to the incident.
