CHICAGO (WLS) — As the government shutdown continues with no clear resolution in sight, a significant concern is emerging for those dependent on federal assistance to put food on the table.
The primary worry centers around the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which is on the brink of depleting its funds.

In Illinois alone, SNAP is a lifeline for two million residents who rely on its benefits to meet their nutritional needs.
With the federal shutdown persisting, there is growing anxiety that numerous families may soon find themselves without the necessary support to purchase food.
Recently, the U.S. Department of Agriculture issued a warning on its website, stating that federal food aid will not be dispensed on November 1, as the resources have been completely exhausted.

The Trump administration has rejected the idea of using $5 billion of contingency funds to keep the program going through November amid the shutdown.
Several Illinois lawmakers gathered at Living Fresh Market in Forest Park over the weekend. They said they’re standing united to support the independent store and shoppers who may soon lose their SNAP benefits.
“We’re going to stand in the gap,” Democratic Illinois House Speaker Emanuel “Chris” Welch said. “We’re here to help put food on their tables.”
Living Fresh Market launched a partnership with Forest Park Food Pantry.
The market will supply the pantry with fresh produce every Monday starting November 3.
Many Chicago area food pantries are already feeling the pressure to help support families in need.
