More than forty years have passed since The Outsiders debuted in cinemas, and Diane Lane is now sharing what she kept as a memento from the iconic film.
During her appearance on Live with Kelly and Mark, hosts Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos inquired about Lane’s experiences working on Francis Ford Coppola’s 1983 movie adaptation of S.E. Hinton’s novel. Lane portrayed the character Sherri “Cherry” Valance in the film.
“Ralph Macchio mentioned on our show that Coppola kept the Socs and the Greasers apart,” Ripa noted.
Consuelos chimed in, saying, “You were like the quintessential Soc.”
Lane agreed, explaining that as “the only female,” she felt quite isolated. When Ripa questioned if Lane was housed in a different hotel, Lane denied it but did mention a special treatment she received during the shoot.
“But I was allowed to have a rental car, which never happens,” she shared. “I mean, I was 17. You can’t get a rental car until you’re 25. You’re not even allowed. I don’t know how they pulled that off. It was 1982. It was a long time ago.”
After Lane teased that this form of special treatment was “enough” for her, Consuelos asked if she “kept” anything from set.
“I still have the bomber wrap jacket,” she revealed. “It says ‘My Cherry,’ and ‘Lane,’ and The Outsiders on the back. I was thinking of giving it to the Smithsonian. I think they passed on it though. Good for me.”
Consuelos agreed, “I’m sure it’s worth a lot.”
Lane joked that if worse comes to worst, she could sell the jacket online for her “retirement plan.”
“If needed, I got a plan C,” she quipped.
Ripa said, “I think it’s very valuable, by the way.”
