Boosting Central IL Education: Trunk-or-Treat Event Combines Candy Fun with Book Donations

URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — The Halloween festivities in Urbana commenced with a lively trunk-or-treat event on Sunday evening, bringing the community together in celebration.

The event drew a crowd of hundreds, who participated not only to gather candy but also to contribute to a meaningful cause. It served as a book donation drive, with the collected books destined for local schools.

Various community groups, including the Urbana Police Department, provided sweet treats for the children dressed in costumes. A detective noted that it offers a wonderful chance to connect with neighbors and enjoy the festive spirit.

“We have kids having fun. We have parents enjoying themselves with hot cocoa. We have people running around. Kids look amazing with all their different outfits, and they run up to us as a police department, and they run into every other community organization out here, and I think that’s what we need,” said Kenneth Sprague, a detective with the Urbana Police Department. “We need to get back to the foundation of family within the community because we’re all a piece of this family in this community.”

The Halloween party also had free food, face painting, hot cocoa and games.
