A police officer from the northern suburbs collaborated with federal agents to apprehend an individual on Monday morning, according to authorities.

Officers from Palatine responded to a disturbance reported around 11:50 a.m. in the 1100 block of East Dundee Road.

At the scene, three federal agents, identifiable by their police insignia, were in the process of detaining an individual. The specific federal agency they represented was not disclosed by officials.

A crowd of approximately 20 people gathered nearby, with some individuals escalating the situation by hurling obscenities and advancing towards the agents.

In response, a Palatine police officer positioned himself between the agents and the crowd, observing the agents as they struggled with the person they were attempting to detain.

The Palatine Police Department said the officer “made a split-second decision to assist in stabilizing the situation” due to “the subject’s noncompliance, the agitated crowd, and the potential risk of injury.”

The department added, “The officer provided verbal instructions in Spanish to the subject and grasped the subject’s right arm, which was already being handcuffed, while agents secured the left arm helping to bring the incident to a safe and peaceful resolution.”

Why the person was detained was not immediately clear.
