Warning: Spoilers ahead for “Fire Country” Season 4, Episode 2 — “Not a Stray”
As the tragedy of Vince Leone’s (Billy Burke) passing begins to fade into the past on “Fire Country,” the question of who will ascend to the role of deputy battalion chief looms large. While Vince’s son, Bode (Max Thieriot), appears to be the obvious choice, another contender quietly emerges—Jake Crawford (Jordan Calloway).
In the aftermath of Vince’s death, Jake exhibits a steadfast dedication to duty, a trait that sets him apart. While Bode struggles with his emotions, Jake remains focused, executing commands efficiently and prioritizing the safety of civilians. His actions in this episode strongly suggest leadership qualities that could see him stepping up as second-in-command.
During a harrowing fire incident in the woods, the crew encounters a homeless encampment. Jake, adhering to the guidance of the new battalion chief, Brett Richards (Shawn Hatosy), prioritizes evacuating everyone swiftly. In contrast, Bode’s compassionate nature leads him to delay the evacuation for the sake of rescuing a dog and allowing people more time to gather their belongings. This decision nearly leads to disaster, as an illegal generator and the ensuing chaos complicate the situation.
Despite the tense moments, everyone emerges unharmed. Jake’s resolve to stay with the Edgewater Fire Department is strengthened, despite earlier doubts. At Vince’s memorial, he confided in Bode about his uncertainty regarding his future with the team. However, a heartfelt conversation with his girlfriend, Violet (Nesta Cooper), reminds him of his belonging in Edgewater. The crisis underscores this realization, convincing Jake that his place is indeed with the team.
Jake decides to stay and fight for his future
Everyone ends up surviving — and having canceled his plans to leave the Edgewater Fire Department, it looks like Jake will stick around to help with many more rescues. While things seemed a bit dicey for a while, with him telling Bode during Vince’s memorial service that he was strongly considering leaving, he ultimately has a heart-to-heart with his girlfriend, Violet (Nesta Cooper). She’s the one who tells him he belongs in Edgewater, and working the fire makes him realize she’s right.
Jake confirms that he won’t be taking a position away from Station 42. While he might not be second-in-command yet — and may have missed out on becoming battalion chief thanks to Brett being the new hire — it’s clear that Jake’s serious about his job and prepared to do what he needs to do to climb the firehouse’s ladder. No matter what happens, it looks like Jake will be a formidable foe — and an equally important friend — for Bode, just as he’s always been.
