Queensland premier slams 'flawed' new Bureau of Meteorology website

The Bureau of Meteorology is facing backlash over a $4 million upgrade to its website, which allegedly left Queensland residents ill-prepared for the severe storms over the weekend.

Premier David Crisafulli addressed the state parliament, expressing disappointment by stating that the recent modifications were “not good enough.”

“Queenslanders consistently demonstrate resilience during these events, but effective preparation is crucial,” Crisafulli emphasized.

He criticized the website alterations, noting that they appear illogical and unhelpful.

Particularly, changes to the rain radar have drawn criticism for seemingly downplaying the intensity of the storm, making it appear less threatening than it actually was.

The new site promised “design and functionality improvements” but promptly attracted widespread negative feedback on social media.

Bureau CEO Peter Stone said last week the new site was “just the beginning” of improvements to the Bureau’s online services.

“We will continue to deliver website improvements in regular updates, based on community and customer feedback, just as we have done throughout the development phase,” he said.

The Bureau has been contacted for comment.
