A group of Brisbane high school students were yesterday told they have been learning the wrong subject all semester, just two days before their exam.

The Queensland Department of Education recently revealed that Year 12 Ancient History students at Brisbane State High School were mistakenly taught a unit on Augustus instead of Julius Caesar. This error is significant because Julius Caesar is the focus of the 2025 external examination.

The mistake came to light just yesterday, prompting immediate action from the department.

Despite the oversight, the department is assuring students that their academic progress will not be adversely affected.

“To prevent any disadvantage to students, the school is submitting a whole cohort Illness and Misadventure application for this assessment,” stated a department spokesperson.

“This application will ensure that these unique circumstances are taken into account when finalizing student results,” the spokesperson added.

The students have already completed 75 per cent of their assessments.

The statement said the school has provided students with an “updated resource pack” for last-minute cramming as well as a “full day of support for students on Tuesday and on Wednesday morning to run through practice exam questions and exemplars”.

“The department and school are deeply sorry for this mistake and are supporting students and families during this time,” the spokesperson said.
