During his visit to Tokyo, Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae lauded President Donald Trump’s diplomatic achievements, particularly applauding his role in brokering ceasefire deals in Asia and the Middle East, which are part of his broader efforts to promote global peace.
Prime Minister Takaichi engaged in discussions with President Trump shortly after his audience with Emperor Naruhito at the Imperial Palace.
“As a matter of fact, Prime Minister Abe [Shinzo] often told me about your dynamic diplomacy. Most recently, Mr. President, succeeded in securing a ceasefire deal between Thailand and Cambodia, and contributed to ensuring peace in Asia,” she said. “Also, the deal you have recently achieved in the Middle East is an unprecedented, historic achievement.”
Takaichi highlighted that Trump’s recent initiatives have significantly contributed to enhancing global stability. “In a remarkably short time, the world has witnessed greater peace, and in this light, I deeply appreciate your steadfast dedication to peace and stability. Your actions, Mr. President, have left me truly impressed and inspired,” she remarked.
This meeting comes on the heels of several key international agreements brokered by Trump in recent months, such as peace deals between Israel and Hamas, Cambodia and Thailand, and Armenia and Azerbaijan. The U.S. has also played a pivotal role in mediating tensions between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, as well as India and Pakistan, under what the White House terms the “Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity.”
Throughout his five-day tour of Asia, Trump emphasized his administration’s commitment to bolstering U.S. alliances and fostering economic ties in the region. At the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit in Malaysia over the weekend, he secured trade and mineral agreements with Malaysia, Thailand, and Cambodia, along with formalizing the peace agreement between Thailand and Cambodia. Trump’s itinerary includes further visits to Japan and South Korea, culminating with his participation in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum.
Trump’s meeting with Takaichi marks his first official engagement with Japan’s first female prime minister, who took office earlier this month after leading the Liberal Democratic Party to victory in parliament. Her government has signaled a desire to deepen security and economic cooperation with the United States, in line with the legacy of her mentor, former Prime Minister Abe Shinzo.
