A financial aid advisor from a college in New York has been accused of a horrific crime involving his girlfriend and their newborn. Authorities allege that 30-year-old Kidane Haile strangled his girlfriend, Kathleen “Katie” Carrig, before setting their Buffalo apartment ablaze. This tragic incident also resulted in the death of their four-day-old son.

According to a statement released by Erie County District Attorney Michael J. Keane, the fatal events allegedly unfolded on October 18. Following the alleged murder, Haile is said to have started a fire in the apartment, a detail corroborated by a report from BTPM. The exact circumstances surrounding the death of the infant, Noah Carrig, remain under investigation.

The gravity of the situation culminated in Haile being charged with second-degree murder this past Thursday. The community is left grappling with the shock of losing not only a young mother who had recently given birth but also her newborn son.

Kathleen “Katie” Carrig, who had just welcomed her son into the world, is remembered by friends and family through heartfelt tributes shared on social media. Her untimely death and that of her child have sparked sorrow and calls for justice.

According to WIVB, Haile was a financial aid advisor at the University at Buffalo. The university said in a statement it doesn’t comment on personnel matters.

“The University at Buffalo extends its heartfelt condolences to those who are grieving the horrific loss of loved ones this past weekend,” the University at Buffalo said. “The university is aware of the serious charge against Kidane Haile. Although the university cannot comment on specific personnel matters, UB has a robust disciplinary process in place to address instances where an employee may have engaged in criminal activity.”

“We are saddened by tragic death of this young mother and her newborn baby. While this case remains an active investigation, my office has secured an indictment against this defendant who is accused of intentionally killing his girlfriend prior to the fire. We are committed to a thorough examination of the evidence and anticipate filing additional charges against the accused. My thoughts remain with the family of these victims as we continue to seek answers and justice,” Keane said.
