In Chicago, a federal judge has taken a cautious approach regarding the use of tear gas by law enforcement during a current enforcement operation in the city. While the judge did not issue an outright ban, concerns were raised about the potential use of chemical agents, particularly with Halloween festivities on the horizon.

Judge Sara Ellis has initiated daily meetings with Border Patrol Commander Gregory Bovino, which will continue through November 5, to ensure accountability among federal agents. During a nearly hour-long hearing, Ellis directed her remarks to Bovino, emphasizing her expectations that agents refrain from violating a temporary restraining order, especially during Halloween when children will be trick-or-treating.

“Halloween is on Friday,” Ellis reminded. “I do not want reports indicating that federal agents are deploying tear gas in areas where children are present.”
