The fall of al-Fashir has stirred painful memories reminiscent of the early 2000s, a time when the Janjaweed militia wreaked havoc by destroying villages and taking the lives of hundreds of thousands in what is recognized as one of the most severe genocides of the 21st century.
In response to the current crisis, the United Nations has issued warnings about “ethnically motivated violations and atrocities,” while the African Union has strongly denounced the “escalating violence” and “alleged war crimes” taking place.
Raymond, a seasoned investigator with 25 years of experience in documenting war crimes globally, remarked, “The level, speed, and totality of violence in Darfur is unlike anything I’ve seen.”
Additionally, pro-democracy activists have leveled accusations against the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) for allegedly executing all wounded individuals receiving treatment at the Saudi Hospital in al-Fashir, further exacerbating the already dire situation.
