Illinois Teen Succumbs to Complications Arising from Dental Procedure

A tragic incident unfolded in Illinois this summer when a 17-year-old girl lost her life following complications from a dental procedure, as confirmed by a medical examiner.

Sophie Farmer passed away in a hospital on July 24, just days after becoming unresponsive during a dental surgery on July 21. The procedure took place at Northern Lakes Oral Surgery and Dental Implant Center located in Grayslake, Illinois, according to reports from the Northwest Herald and the Lake & McHenry County Scanner.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office classified her death as “natural,” attributing it to “complications of dental extraction surgery under sedation.” They further noted that these complications were linked to an ARID1B gene mutation and several neurological abnormalities.

ARID1B-related disorder is a rare genetic condition that leads to significant developmental delays and disabilities, as highlighted by the Foundation for ARID1B Research. Individuals affected by this disorder typically require lifelong care and often face challenges in achieving independent living.

Reports say the Grayslake Fire Protection District was called to the Northern Lakes Oral Surgery and Dental Implant Center on July 21 for an unresponsive patient. The patient, later identified as Farmer, was taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center in critical condition and then transferred to Advocate Children’s Hospital in Park Ridge.

She died there on July 24.

According to Farmer’s obituary, “she was welcomed into the arms of Jesus on Thursday, July 24, 2025, while surrounded by family and friends.” The obituary says she loved boating, camping and dogs and was also active in her youth group and loved to sing on the worship team.

“From the moment she came into our lives, Sophie filled our hearts with immeasurable love and laughter,” the obituary says.

She was laid to rest at Crystal Lake Memorial Park Cemetery on Aug. 2 and is survived by her parents, Matt and Marsha, along with a brother, a sister and four grandparents.
