When Colin Farrell appeared on The View for an interview on Wednesday, he and Joy Behar delved into a profound conversation about their late fathers, addiction, and the journey to sobriety. The dialogue was so engaging that it left little room for the other hosts to pose their prepared questions to the actor.

Farrell was on the show to discuss his latest film, Ballad of a Small Player, which explores the life of a man ensnared by his gambling addiction. The interview took an unexpected turn when Behar asked Farrell to shed light on the psychology of gambling, drawing connections to her own experiences with her late father, who was also a gambler.

The discussion veered into Behar’s personal gambling preferences, revealing her fondness for Atlantic City. This prompted Sara Haines to gently interrupt the conversation, hoping to steer the interview back on track.

Haines interjected with a light-hearted request, “Can we talk to him a little?” Her timing was impeccable as the cue for a commercial break had already begun to play, indicating their segment was nearly over.

As the conversation wrapped up, Whoopi Goldberg expressed the need for more time with Farrell, saying, “You need to come back because this wasn’t enough time.” Farrell humorously replied, “Are we done? Brutal!”

But Farrell had a rather revealing conversation with Behar before they were interrupted.

“Specifically the gambling I’m interested in, because my father was a gambler… I wonder about what the pathology is because it made my mother’s life miserable. What is it about gamblers that I should know?” she asked Farrell, before adding to the shock of many of her co-hosts, “It’s too late. He’s dead.”

“No, never too late though. I’m still trying to figure out my old man out who died six months ago,” Farrell responded. He offered some advice to her about why it’s worth reflecting on the past when she asked, “Have you been in therapy? You sound like you have been.”

“Have I been in therapy?” he asked Behar incredulously, sparking laughter from the audience. “I had to remortgage my house when I went to therapy. Are you joking? No I’ve done a bit, two rehabs and all that jazz.”

The View airs on weekdays at 11/10c on ABC.
