PEORIA, Ill. (WGN/AP) — An Illinois jury has found a former sheriff’s deputy guilty of second-degree murder in the tragic shooting of Sonya Massey, a Black woman who had dialed 911 seeking assistance.

The verdict against Sean Grayson was delivered on Wednesday by a jury consisting of nine women and three men.

The incident unfolded on July 6, 2024, when Grayson responded to a call from Massey, who had reported a prowler near her Springfield home. At the time of the shooting, Massey was reportedly holding a pan of hot water, which Grayson’s defense claimed he feared she might use against him.
