Microsoft outage fix in progress, but could take hours to fully restore

Just a little over a week following a significant disruption at Amazon Web Services that incapacitated numerous websites for hours, Microsoft faced its own challenges with an outage on Wednesday, impacting its Azure cloud computing platform.

This service interruption affected a range of Microsoft offerings, from Microsoft 365 to Xbox. Downdetector, a platform that collates user reports of technical difficulties, noted that the issues commenced shortly after 11:30 a.m. ET.

On Azure’s status page, the latest updates reveal that Microsoft pinpointed the root of the problem and has implemented a solution. However, it may take several hours for the fix to be fully effective, with expectations for normal service to resume by 7:20 p.m. ET.

The ripple effect of the Azure outage was felt by numerous businesses and platforms. For instance, Alaska Airlines reported that the disruption had affected “key systems, including our websites,” preventing some customers from checking in for flights online.

Businesses and platforms using Azure’s services reported widespread issues. Alaska Airlines said the outage caused “a disruption to key systems, including our websites,” which left some customers unable to check-in for flights online.

Customers also reported issues with other apps like Starbucks and Costco, and social media users complained of outages on several online games, including Minecraft.
