The Elbaph Arc of One Piece has been a whirlwind of revelations and pivotal storyline shifts, unveiling everything from the hidden history of the world to the introduction of Imu’s formidable Domi Reversi technique. While many moments have spotlighted key characters, Chapter 1163 offers a subtler yet significant reveal that might have slipped under the radar for some fans.

In Chapter 1163, the narrative continues to delve into Rocks D. Xebec’s God Valley flashback. This segment showcases the Rocks Pirates embroiled in fierce battles against the Roger Pirates, the World Government, and sometimes even among themselves. Notably, a confrontation between Captain John and Ganzui highlights a long-awaited return of a Devil Fruit that has been absent from the storyline for over twenty years.

Chapter 1163, aptly titled “Promise,” turns the spotlight on Rocks D. Xebec’s crew, allowing even the lesser-known members to shine on the battlefield. While the likes of Rocks, Whitebeard, Kaido, and Big Mom gear up to confront Imu, Captain John seizes the opportunity during the chaos. Utilizing the Magnet-Magnet Fruit, he sets into motion a plan to pilfer a massive trove of treasure from the island, leading to a face-off with Ganzui, one of his own allies.

The Bomb-Bomb Fruit Finally Makes Its Long-Awaited Return in One Piece Chapter 1163

One Piece Chapter 1163 — titled “Promise” — is yet another significant showing for Rocks D. Xebec’s crew, and this time around, even the crew’s lesser-known members are leaving their mark on the battlefield. While Rocks, Whitebeard, Kaido, and Big Mom prepare to fight Imu, Captain John uses the chaos (and the Magnet-Magnet Fruit) to initiate his plan to steal the copious amounts of treasure from the island, setting up a conflict between John and one of his own crewmates, Ganzui.

Rather than John escaping with all the loot for himself, the pirate is quickly stopped in his tracks by an explosive attack from Ganzui, confirming that Ganzui is the former wielder of the Bomb-Bomb Fruit possessed by Mr. 5 in One Piece‘s core narrative. Considering the Bomb-Bomb Fruit was introduced way back in Chapter 110, which was released in October 1999, it’s safe to say its return to the series is incredibly cathartic for longtime fans of the franchise.

Mr. 5 isn’t around for long and ultimately has little impact on One Piece‘s story; however, there’s a reason that his powers have been a common talking point for fans since the early 2000s. With characters like My Hero Academia‘s Bakugo showcasing the raw, destructive power of explosive abilities, it always felt disappointing to see how little Mr. 5 accomplished during his time in the series. Thankfully, Ganzui is finally showing just how powerful the Bomb-Bomb Fruit can truly be.

Ganzui Proves to Be Far More Effective With the Bomb-Bomb Fruit Than Mr. 5

When Mr. 5 enters One Piece‘s story, he and his partner are almost immediately one-shotted by Monkey D. Luffy and Roronoa Zoro. It’s a poor showing for the former member of Baroque Works, and it’s brief enough that fans barely get a grasp of the Bomb-Bomb Fruit’s strength — let alone its true potential. That said, Ganzui’s use of the Devil Fruit in Chapter 1163 is much more impressive than any display by Mr. 5, finally lending credibility to the idea that the Bomb-Bomb Fruit could have been a powerful tool in the right hands.

Using a very similar attack to those performed by Mr. 5, Ganzui defeats Captain John with a single shot that causes an explosion large enough to be seen from around God Valley. Admittedly, One Piece hasn’t given fans a clear idea of how strong Captain John is, but considering his prominent role on the Rocks Pirates, it feels safe to say that he’s far stronger than pre-timeskip characters like Mr. 5.

To make matters even more interesting, One Piece Chapter 1163 teases an impending fight between Ganzui and Golden Lion Shiki before cutting away from their scene, potentially setting up an ever more impressive display of power by the user of the Bomb-Bomb Fruit. Should Ganzui also go toe-to-toe with Shiki — an extremely powerful character in his own right — then the relatively unknown member of the Rocks Pirates may have been more important to One Piece‘s history than fans realized.

After all, Ganzui does show up one single time in One Piece‘s core narrative: the Thriller Bark Arc. Over time, more and more of the zombies under Gecko Moria’s command have been revealed to be prominent figures from the past, with Ganzui now showing signs of why Gecko Moria would have wanted to add the pirate to his ranks. Although Ganzui’s time left in the series is likely short given the current state of God Valley, the hulking pirate still has plenty of time to show off his Devil Fruit — even if it costs the Rocks Pirates in the process.
