Four GOP Senators Side With Dems, Vote to End Trump's Global Tariffs

Let’s refer to them as the Usual Suspects—Senators who frequently either stand undecided or actively obstruct President Donald Trump’s plans. This group includes Senators Rand Paul (R-KY), Mitch McConnell (R-KY), Susan Collins (R-ME), and Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), a particular favorite of my colleague Ward Clark for his criticism. On Thursday, these four joined forces with every Democrat to vote against Trump’s global tariffs.

In a recent twist, Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC), who had previously aligned with these four in a Tuesday vote to oppose Trump’s tariffs on Brazil, chose to support his party’s stance in the latest vote.

Despite Trump’s ongoing negotiations with China and other Asian nations, these Republicans, alongside Democrats, are eager to limit his negotiating power:

This vote, however, ultimately serves as a symbolic gesture, with little likelihood of progressing further.

The Senate on Thursday voted to terminate President Trump’s sweeping global tariffs, after passing two resolutions seeking to repeal the levies in Canada and Brazil earlier this week.

Four Republican senators voted with Democrats to approve the bipartisan resolution ending the steep rates on allies such as the European Union, Japan and South Korea.

The vote, however, is largely for show and has little chance of going anywhere further.

The resolution almost certainly won’t be taken up by the Republican-controlled House, making it largely symbolic. Democrats forced a vote on the resolution, which was led by Sen. Ron Wyden of Oregon, by bypassing Senate GOP leadership using a provision of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, the law that the president invoked to impose the tariffs.

Sen. Mike Crapo (R-ID) felt strongly that the resolution was not good for the economy or the American people:

“…at this juncture, this resolution is counterproductive to helping American families and businesses of all sizes.”

“It’s no secret that for decades, countries around the globe have raised tariff and non-tariff barriers against Americans and against American business, and have raised the cost for Americans and American businesses without response from the United States. President Trump is now responding,” Crapo said. “The president’s negotiations are bearing fruit.”

As we reported, Trump announced the framework for a trade deal with China early Thursday that would include lowering some of the tariffs he imposed earlier and a promise by Chinese President Xi Jinping to crack down on the flow of fentanyl from his country. China also committed to continue rare earth mineral exports without new restrictions.

Meanwhile, the big question remains: are Trump’s tariffs constitutional? As we’ve reported, the Supreme Court will start hearings in November to judge the matter.

In the meantime, expect the president to keep using them for maximum leverage as he makes deal after deal.

Editor’s Note: The Schumer Shutdown is here. Rather than put the American people first, Chuck Schumer and the radical Democrats forced a government shutdown for healthcare for illegals. They own this.
