An Oregon father has been charged with child neglect after his 2-year-old son went missing and was later found deceased. The tragic incident has led to legal action against Aaron Scott Paulsen, following the discovery of young Dane’s body.

The charges came on October 16, when a grand jury indicted Paulsen, months after the harrowing incident in March. Dane vanished from the family backyard and was ultimately discovered in a river two miles away after a ten-day search effort. The cause of death was determined to be drowning.

According to court documents accessed by Fox’s local affiliate, KPTV, Paulsen faces charges of second-degree child neglect. He is accused of failing to supervise his toddler adequately, resulting in the child’s disappearance.

ABC affiliate KATU covered the indictment details, highlighting a statement from the Lincoln County District Attorney’s Office. The office alleges that Paulsen, while responsible for Dane, left him unattended in circumstances that posed a risk to the child’s safety and well-being.

Dane’s mother, Cha Met Jackson, expressed her dissatisfaction with the handling of the case to KPTV. She and her family suspect that the drowning might involve more than just an accident. Jackson recounted that the last time she saw her son was when he ran out of their house as she was tending to her father, who resides in a trailer on their property.

Jackson told KPTV, “Dane goes out the back door and comes straight to the trailer, I hear him he goes ‘[baby jibberish],’ and I was like, ‘Oh, bubby I’m coming.’ And then he laughs so oddly, like, laughing like somebody’s tickling him. And then it’s silence. And I was like, ‘Dane? Dane?’”

According to KPTV, Jackson said that she told police there was purportedly an unidentified man watching her and Dane from a distance. She also said she saw another man taking photos of trail cameras about two weeks before Dane went missing.

Now, Dane’s own father faces charges in connection with his son’s death while Jackson believes others should have been investigated. A warrant for Paulsen’s arrest was issued on Oct. 23 with bail set at $20,000. He is scheduled to be arraigned on Nov. 3.
