In Raeford, North Carolina, a tragic incident unfolded involving a 13-year-old boy who was facing charges of first-degree murder in connection with the death of his grandmother. The young suspect was subsequently shot and killed by police, as confirmed by local authorities.

The sequence of events began at approximately 9:20 a.m. when the Hoke County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to conduct a welfare check at a residence in Raeford. A second 911 call soon followed, reporting the discovery of an unresponsive 68-year-old woman named Connie Linen. Emergency medical services arrived and sadly declared her dead at the scene, according to the sheriff’s office.

As the investigation progressed, detectives identified the grandson as the primary suspect. Collaborating with the district attorney’s office, they proceeded to file a first-degree murder charge against him through secured-custody documentation.

The teen was later located in a vehicle reported as stolen, which was registered to his grandmother. This vehicle was found behind an abandoned mobile home in the Cameron community, as detailed by the Lee County Sheriff’s Office. Upon being discovered, the suspect fled on foot, crossing a street into a nearby wooded area.

During the ensuing chase, authorities reported that the teenager allegedly confronted a deputy with a piece of 2×4 lumber, which he had picked up from a nearby yard. In response to this perceived threat, the deputy discharged his firearm, striking the suspect, as reported by ABC Raleigh-Durham affiliate WTVD.

The teen died at the scene, LCSO confirmed.

Hoke County Sheriff Roderick Virgil said in a statement obtained by WTVD: “This has been a tragic and emotional situation for everyone involved. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Ms. Linen, as well as Nationally Accredited Agency the family of the juvenile. We ask that our community come together with compassion and understanding as we all process this difficult event.”

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is conducting a separate investigation, which is standard protocol in all officer-involved shootings.

This comes as a manhunt is underway in Eastern North Carolina for a 24-year-old accused of killing his grandmother and setting her house on fire.
