EVANSTON, Ill. (WLS) — Local leaders in the northern suburbs are voicing concerns about the disruption caused by federal immigration agents in Evanston, Skokie, and nearby areas during Halloween, as highlighted in a recent press statement.

On Thursday, Governor JB Pritzker urged federal entities to halt immigration enforcement activities during the Halloween weekend, a plea that was met with criticism from Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, who labeled the request as “shameful.”

On Friday afternoon, Evanston Mayor Daniel Biss, Cook County Commissioner Josina Morita, and representatives from local schools gathered in front of Chute Middle School to address the issue.

A representative from District 65 noted that immigration enforcement activities were visible from school premises, raising concerns about their impact on the student environment.

The city communicated that there has been an uptick in the presence of federal agents within the community as of Friday.

School districts 65 and 202 leadership closed their campuses for outside activity Friday.

“Evanston stands as a Welcoming City and has just enacted Resolution 93-R-25, the Ice-Free Zones Resolution. This resolution reflects our commitment to fostering an inclusive and safe community as we navigate these uncertain times together,” the city said.

This is a developing story; check back with ABC7 Chicago for updates.
