ST. LUCIE COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) — An 18-year-old is facing charges for driving under the influence after a dangerous incident in Port St. Lucie where he allegedly drove in the wrong direction, narrowly missing a head-on collision with a police sergeant.

The police department reported that around 1:30 a.m. on Sunday, Jake Abbott, 18, was found traveling against traffic on Okeechobee Road near mile markers 123 and 124.

Authorities explained that Abbott came alarmingly close to crashing into a sergeant from the Port St. Lucie Police Department who was on his way home after completing his shift.

Quick-thinking, the sergeant veered onto the shoulder to avoid the impending crash and immediately informed dispatch of his location, providing details about Abbott’s vehicle as the suspect reportedly continued on his way.

Concerned for the safety of other motorists due to Abbott’s continued reckless driving, the sergeant used his spotlight to illuminate the road, alerting other drivers to the imminent hazard.

According to PSLPD, Abbott eventually stopped while still driving the wrong way. The sergeant made contact with Abbott and noticed a strong odor of alcohol and an empty can of Twisted Tea inside the vehicle.

The St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office launched the investigation and arrested Abbott. He was charged with DUI and fleeing and eluding.

Video of the incident shows deputies placing handcuffs on Abbott, who can be heard saying, “Nah, I hear you guys. You guys gotta do what you gotta do, Boss.”

PSLPD warns that anyone who provides alcohol to a person under 21 can be charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
