In an unfortunate incident in the northern suburbs, a head-on collision on Sunday afternoon left five individuals, including two children, injured, according to officials.

Emergency responders from the Harvard Fire Protection District were called to the scene near Route 14 and Lembcke Road in the unincorporated area of Harvard shortly after 4 p.m.

Upon arrival, they encountered an SUV and a sedan, both severely damaged, with debris scattered across the road.

The crash resulted in injuries to two children traveling in the SUV, as reported by fire officials. One child, in serious condition, was airlifted to a Level I trauma center, while the other, with minor injuries, was transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital.

According to reports, one of the children was thrown from their car seat during the crash.

Firefighters also worked to free sedan’s driver, who was trapped in his vehicle, officials said. An ambulance transported him to a local hospital in serious condition.

Officials said two other adults, who were in the SUV, suffered moderate injuries and were also taken to a local hospital.

The roadway was closed for nearly 90 minutes in both directions.

The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office is investigating.
