A young family south of Brisbane has been left traumatised after an armed man allegedly broke into their house twice in the same night.
The couple, who had only just moved into the Logan home with their five-month-old baby over the weekend, said it was a terrifying case of mistaken identity.

A young couple, still in shock from a harrowing encounter, shared their unsettling experience with 9News. They requested anonymity due to the traumatic nature of the event.

The father recounted the moment of terror, saying, “I thought this front door was locked that we have but it wasn’t because it doesn’t lock properly.” His words paint a vivid picture of vulnerability that many can relate to.

To their horror, an intruder entered their home, wielding what appeared to be a rifle. “Someone basically said, ‘Oi’, and the next thing a man walked in with what appeared to be a rifle,” he explained, highlighting the suddenness and fear of the situation.

Desperation set in as the couple shouted that they had a baby inside, an act of instinct that seemed to resonate with the intruder. Miraculously, the man left the premises around 10:10 p.m., leaving the shaken family behind.

In the immediate aftermath, they contacted the police and took precautionary measures by boarding up their unit. Despite their efforts to secure their home, the nightmare was not over. The alleged intruder returned around 1:05 a.m., prolonging the family’s ordeal.

“He’s, yeah, forced his way in, kicked the glass door, entered the house, and just kept asking for the person that used to live here, money, drugs,” the father alleged.

The mother was in another room with their child and said all she could hear was her partner screaming “There’s a baby in here, there’s a baby in here”.

“I feared for my life. I feared for my partner’s life,” she said.

“I’m just in there thinking, ‘Is my partner about to get shot to death, and I’m just gonna walk out to a dead body? Like, am I about to be a single mum, or am I about to have my baby orphaned?’”

Police allege the would-be robber fled but only made it 100 metres up the road before collapsing in a neighbouring driveway.

Officers allegedly found a gel blaster nearby and towed a Toyota Kluger from the scene.

The young couple are preparing to move back out.

“We’re just in our early 20s, like, first home, like living out of family, you know,” the mother said. “And I can’t have my baby around this.”

A 29-year-old Hillcrest man was charged with two counts each of attempted armed robbery and enter with intent and was expected to face Beenleigh Magistrates Court today.
