USDA tells stores not to offer discounts for SNAP users

NEW YORK (PIX11) – The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has issued a caution to retailers participating in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), advising them against extending special discounts to SNAP beneficiaries amid the ongoing government shutdown.

Due to the government shutdown, which has stretched on for a month, approximately 3 million New Yorkers are experiencing a temporary halt in their SNAP benefits. In a bid to assist those affected, several businesses and restaurants have stepped forward, providing free meals and discounts to individuals who rely on SNAP during this challenging period.

However, the USDA has reiterated that approved SNAP retailers must adhere to the Equal Treatment Rule, which mandates that all customers be treated equally. This rule prohibits offering exclusive discounts to SNAP recipients.
