Defunding of police in Vermont town a 'borderline nightmare': Ex-officer

In Burlington, Vermont, what was once a peaceful college town has faced growing challenges since the city opted to reduce its police force in 2020.

The Burlington Police Department, originally staffed with 90 officers, now finds itself operating with 30 fewer personnel. A decision made five years ago to prioritize social workers over law enforcement is now being reconsidered as the city seeks to rehire officers.

However, many officers are reluctant to return. Business owner Mark Bouchette believes the issue transcends typical party lines, suggesting it’s more of a debate within Democratic and progressive circles.

“I find it difficult to criticize their intentions,” Bouchette remarked. “Some genuinely believe that in an ideal world, police wouldn’t be necessary. Perhaps that’s true in a utopia, but that’s not the reality I live in.”
