The United States mourns the loss of a significant political leader.

Former Vice President Richard “Dick” B. Cheney, who served as the 46th vice president under Republican President George W. Bush, has passed away at the age of 84, his family announced on November 3.

In a statement shared with NBC News, the family noted, “His beloved wife of 61 years, Lynne, along with his daughters, Liz and Mary, and other family members were by his side as he passed.” They further revealed that Cheney succumbed to complications arising from pneumonia, as well as cardiac and vascular disease.

Reflecting on his extensive public service, the family wrote, “For decades, Dick Cheney served our nation, holding roles such as White House Chief of Staff, Congressman for Wyoming, Secretary of Defense, and Vice President of the United States.”

Cheney’s family also took a moment to acknowledge the enduring personal legacy he leaves behind within their close-knit family.

“Dick Cheney was a great and good man who taught his children and grandchildren to love our country,” they wrote, “and to live lives of courage, honor, love, kindness, and fly fishing. We are grateful beyond measure for all Dick Cheney did for our country.”
