In the wake of Hurricane Melissa’s catastrophic impact on Jamaica, the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) in Ridgeland, South Carolina, has launched a donation drive to aid those suffering the aftermath. The hurricane, a formidable Category 5 storm, slammed into the southwest of the island with terrifying winds reaching 185 mph. The devastation was severe, leading to loss of life and extensive destruction of infrastructure, while over 300 American citizens were compelled to evacuate.

Nearly a week since the hurricane’s merciless onslaught, the JCSO, in collaboration with various agencies, is actively collecting donations to support the beleaguered Jamaican community. This initiative aims to provide much-needed relief and assistance to the island’s residents in their hour of need.

Individuals wishing to contribute to this humanitarian effort can deliver their donations to 12008 N Jacob Smart Blvd in Ridgeland. For those unable to drop off items in person, arrangements for pick-up can be made by reaching out to Sgt. Stephan Ashby at 843-305-0098.

The community is encouraged to donate essential items, which will be vital in helping the people of Jamaica recover and rebuild in the wake of this natural disaster.

Items needed include:

  • Canned items: meats, vegetables, fruits, cans with pop-top lids
  • Dry foods: Bagged or boxed rice, beans and pastas
  • Ready-to-eat items: Granola bars, instant noodles, jarred items, soups
  • Hygiene items: Soap, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, sanitary pads, diapers, wipes, deodorants, toothbrushes, toothpaste, mouthwash
  • New or gently used clothing: Socks, shirts, pants, shorts, sweaters, undergarments
  • Hydration: Water bottles, sports drinks and hydration powder packs
