In a deeply troubling incident in Wisconsin, a man named Casey Yiannackopoulos faces serious charges following a tragic car crash. Allegedly driving under the influence, Yiannackopoulos is accused of abandoning his mother at the scene of the accident, where she later died, while he sought refuge in their shared home.

The charges against Yiannackopoulos include reckless homicide and hit-and-run in connection with the crash that occurred on a Sunday evening. According to WISN, he declined to submit to field sobriety tests at the scene, and authorities are now awaiting the results of a blood draw to determine his level of intoxication at the time.

Emergency teams arrived at the scene in Muskego, a suburb of Milwaukee, to find the 77-year-old victim, who has not been named publicly, trapped and unresponsive inside the vehicle. Despite being rushed to the hospital, she succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead.

Eyewitnesses recounted seeing the driver, Yiannackopoulos, stagger away from the wreckage. He allegedly promised bystanders that he was going to seek help, but instead, he retreated to his nearby home and hid in a crawl space.

Authorities located him after a four-hour search, during which they deployed a taser and a police dog to extract him from his hiding spot. The case highlights the devastating impact of impaired driving and the profound consequences of choosing to flee from responsibility.

In court this week, Court Commisioner Daniel Rieck told Yiannackopoulos he found his behavior “depraved.”

“This went from driving while drunk, having what one would presume is a very unfortunate, traumatic accident, losing your mother, but then quite literally leaving her to die. Why? Because you didn’t want to get in trouble,” Rieck said.

According to the complaint, Yiannackopoulos told police that if he’d known his mother had died, he would have been “way more cooperative.”

Prosecutors asked for a $250,000 bail, but Rieck set it at triple that. He is due in court again on Thursday, Law&Crime said.
