A jury in Chatham County, Georgia, delivered a guilty verdict on Thursday in the case of a man’s murder involving a local longshoreman from 2022. The ruling marked the conclusion of a high-profile case that has gripped the community.

The tragic incident unfolded on March 29, 2022, when Anterro Jenks was fatally shot on East 57th Street. The 42-year-old, who worked as a longshoreman, had just received a work bonus and intended to purchase a new vehicle that very day, according to a spokesperson from the Chatham County District Attorney’s office.

Before the incident, Jenks had stopped by the Quick Stop on DeLesseps Avenue to pick up candy for his family. It was there that he was seen with a significant amount of cash by Jamonta Jones, who was accompanying the accused, Marquis Porter.

According to the district attorney’s office, Porter and Jones trailed Jenks as he made his way back to his neighborhood. During the trial, an eyewitness recounted seeing someone resembling Porter approach Jenks from behind, shortly before gunshots rang out, leaving Jenks to collapse.

Jenks succumbed to his injuries just a block away from his home, where his children awaited his return, adding a poignant note to the tragic event.

Though Porter said he was elsewhere at the time of the crime, cell phone mapping and records of his alleged alibi disproved his claims, officials said.

The jury found him guilty of malice murder, two counts of felony murder, aggravated assault and attempt to commit armed robbery.

Porter is set to be sentenced on Dec. 16. He faces life without parole plus 30 years.
