BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. – A second suspect has been apprehended in connection with the tragic “ambush” shooting that occurred in October outside a restaurant in Cocoa, claiming the life of a 15-year-old girl and wounding two others.

The local sheriff’s office revealed on Thursday that 20-year-old Xazavier Butler was arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of Karyah Duncan. The incident took place at Anchors Seafood and Chicken on Clearlake Road, where Duncan was one of three individuals who were shot.

Previously, Jonterich Smith, also 20 years old, had been taken into custody just days following the attack.

This week, both Smith and Butler faced indictments on charges of murder. Additionally, they are accused of attempted first-degree murder with bodily harm for the injuries sustained by the two other victims, both of whom are 18-year-old males.

Sheriff Wayne Ivey described the shooting as an “ambush” and that it was an “extremely isolated incident.”

The sheriff’s office said the three victims were in a vehicle in the parking lot of the restaurant when a dark colored SUV pulled behind them, blocking their exit.

Multiple people exited the SUV and began shooting toward the vehicle and the occupants who were attempting to exit it, officials said.

The assailants – Smith, Butler and a third unidentified person – then got back into the SUV and left the area prior to the arrival of deputies, officials said. The SUV has since been recovered.

Anyone with information in the case is asked to call Crimeline at 800-423-8477 or the sheriff’s office at 321-633-8413.
