CHICAGO (WLS) — An intense police operation unfolded on Chicago’s West Side Friday afternoon following the theft of an ambulance, leading to a high-stakes pursuit. Law enforcement successfully apprehended a suspect in connection with the incident.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) is currently looking into the details of a police-involved shooting associated with this event.

According to Cicero police, the ambulance was taken from Loretto Hospital, prompting a swift response from the authorities.

Eyewitness footage from Chopper 7 captured the dramatic moment when the ambulance collided at approximately 4:02 p.m. near the intersection of Chicago and Cicero avenues, marking the chaotic scene on the city’s West Side.

A person appeared to be detained after a Cicero stolen ambulance pursuit ended in a crash and massive Chicago police response on the West Side Friday.

In response to the situation, more than 30 Chicago Police Department vehicles converged on the location, where numerous officers worked together to detain the individual found in the driver’s seat of the stolen ambulance.

The ambulance also appeared to hit a CPD squad car earlier at West Jackson Boulevard and South Central Avenue in the Austin neighborhood.

CPD officials confirmed at least three CPD squad cars and multiple civilian vehicles were struck by the ambulance during the chase. Three officers were taken to hospitals for observation, and the suspect was also taken to a hospital after their arrest.

COPA said it was investigating a police-involved shooting in the same area, near 300 S. Central.

Officials from the town of Cicero later told ABC7 that the stolen ambulance was operated by three paramedics who took a patient to Loretto Hospital.

“As a patient was leaving Loretto, escorted by security, that man ran to the driver’s side door of the ambulance, jumped in and drove away while [a] Cicero paramedic remained in the back,” an update from Cicero read in part. “That paramedic ultimately jumped out of the ambulance about two blocks away.”

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
