Senate holds rare Saturday session aimed at ending shutdown

Senator Lindsey Graham, a Republican from South Carolina and a staunch supporter of the president, praised President Trump for his recent call to reform Obamacare, expressed in a Truth Social post earlier on Saturday. Graham declared that Republicans will not support extending the healthcare tax credits associated with the Affordable Care Act.

Graham emphasized on the Senate floor, “We will not extend this program for another year as it would be unjust to taxpayers and perpetuate a healthcare system spiraling out of control. This would only further benefit insurance companies. Our goal is to replace this flawed system with something genuinely beneficial for consumers, aiming to reduce healthcare costs.”

He further stated that “instilling fear among the public will not persuade us, as Republicans, to support a flawed healthcare bill.” However, he mentioned that both the Republicans and the president are open to discussions with Democrats about achieving improved value and reduced premiums.

“But to achieve this, we must fundamentally alter the principles of Obamacare,” Graham asserted.

He also applauded the president for taking action by stating, “He’s provided us with a clear direction. I intend to follow his guidance and advice.”

Graham said he spoke with the president this morning. He said Mr. Trump would “like to sit down and see if we can come up with a better solution.”

“I know we can, but we’re not going to do it while the government’s shut down,” he said.

Graham urged Democrats to “end this madness.”

“To my Democratic colleagues, let’s open up the government and act like adults and see if we can get this problem in a better spot,” he said. “We’ll never do it with the government shut down.”
