In the early hours of November 1, a 45-year-old man found himself in police custody after allegedly breaking into a sorority house at UC Berkeley. According to the Berkeley Police Department, the intruder not only made away with food and women’s underwear but also invaded the privacy of the residents by observing them as they showered.

The unsettling incident unfolded at a sorority house located on the 2300 block of Warring Street, near the university’s south campus. Around 6 a.m., an alert resident spotted the unfamiliar man inside her bedroom, prompting him to flee through the back door.

“Officers found other women that had seen the suspect in the sorority house as early as 3 a.m.,” Berkeley PD said. “When officers reviewed the security video from the house, they found multiple clips of the suspect walking inside and outside the building until about 6:35 a.m. even leaving, changing clothes and then returning in different clothing as well as a ski mask.”

Detectives with the department’s sex crimes unit used the security footage and additional evidence to identify the suspect as Courtney Alford of Dublin.

Using automated license plate readers, detectives found multiple images of Alford’s vehicle in the area around the time of the burglary. An arrest warrant was issued for Alford on Nov. 4. Police found Alford in Castro Valley the following day and made the arrest.

Officers searched Alford’s Dublin home following the arrest and found parts to an assault rifle, high-capacity magazines and more than 900 rounds of ammunition.

The Alameda County District Attorney’s Office charged Alford with burglary, prowling/peeking, invading privacy, felon in possession of a gun, felon in possession of ammo, and several counts of unlawful entry.
