With SNAP paused, food pantry workers fill in the gaps

The Supreme Court has issued a temporary stay on a lower court ruling that mandated full funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which provides crucial support to approximately 42 million Americans. These benefits have been uncertain since November 1, affected by the government shutdown.

SNAP plays a pivotal role in the nation’s social safety net, aiding one in eight Americans who struggle to afford food each month. In response to the uncertainty surrounding SNAP benefits, food banks nationwide are working to address the increased demand.

Laura Glaza, the executive director of the Glen House Food Pantry near Chicago, shared her observations on “Morning in America with Hena Doba.” She noted a noticeable rise in the number of individuals seeking assistance from food pantries like hers.
