A heartwarming story of courage and community unfolded in Blackford County, Indiana, when a group of children sprang into action to rescue a cherished neighbor from a house fire.

For over a decade, Nina Osgood has been a constant in the lives of these five children, stepping in to care for them when their mother, Keisha Gerber, is at work. With her demanding and irregular work schedule, Gerber has always relied on Osgood’s support.

“She’s an incredible person,” Gerber shared with Nexstar’s WANE. “Nina would do anything for us; she truly goes above and beyond for me and my kids.”

Earlier this month, a potentially tragic situation was averted thanks to the keen eyes of 9-year-old Brenna Fields, who noticed smoke and flames billowing from Osgood’s window.

Earlier this month, Brenna Fields, 9, saw smoke and bright flames rising from Osgood’s window.

Brenna; her 11-year-old brother Reese, and 8-year-old cousin Grant Cosner rushed to rescue Osgood.

Keshia Gerber shared the below photos with WANE:

Without a second thought, they entered through Osgood’s back door, and shook her awake.

“It was black smoke rolling in when Nina was coming out, so she was like coughing,” said Reese.

“They say, about 15 more minutes, I’d be dead. So they was little heroes,” said Osgood of the kids. She did, however, lose two of her dogs in the fire.

With the help of the family and the rest of the Blackford County community, Osgood has since been able to find a new home.
