Discover the Impact: Champaign's Inspiring Field of Flags Initiative

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — In anticipation of Veteran’s Day, students from a high school in Champaign County took the opportunity to pay tribute to veterans this past Sunday.

The Centennial High School archery team organized their annual “Field of Flags” event on Sunday afternoon. Assistant Coach Heather Miller shared that this initiative, which began last year, serves as a meaningful community service project.

Community members, veterans, archers, and their families gathered for the occasion. The event featured a presentation of colors by active military personnel, after which participants planted flags on the school’s front lawn.

Miller highlighted that some former archery team members are veterans themselves or are currently serving in the military. This event provided a special way for the current team to honor veterans, especially as they approach a significant anniversary.

“I think it’s really important that students understand that the sacrifices that people have given over the years so that we can have that 250th anniversary, and so we thought we could do a little bit of a part in teaching them a little bit of the history, getting them involved in the history,” Miller said.

She said that they were also honoring future veterans. One member of the archery team has already enlisted to serve in the United States military after high school.
