Trump says the GOP 'broke" Schumer

In a recent interview, President Trump expressed disapproval of Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer’s (D-N.Y.) approach to the government shutdown, asserting that Republicans emerged victorious.

Speaking with Fox News’s Laura Ingraham, Trump remarked, “I believe he overstepped. He assumed he could pressure the Republicans, but it was he who ended up yielding.”

The president added, “I’ve never witnessed a politician shift so dramatically. He was once quite skilled, but his prowess seems to have dwindled.”

Schumer is currently under scrutiny from fellow Democrats following his decision on Sunday to support a procedural vote aimed at reopening the government. Critics argue that he failed to unite the Democratic caucus, leading seven Democrats and Sen. Angus King (I-Maine) to side with Republicans in the vote, despite lacking any guarantees for extending ObamaCare subsidies.

The minority leader opposed the measure, citing concerns over the impending expiration of these subsidies at the year’s end.

Progressive Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) said in a post on X that Schumer is “no longer effective,” while Rep. Mark Pocan (D-Wis.), another progressive, slammed Schumer for not endorsing Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani (D) in New York City’s mayoral race.

“Don’t endorse or say who you voted for in NYC, despite there being a Dem candidate. Get Dem Senators to negotiate a terrible “deal” that does nothing real about healthcare. Screw over a national political party. Profile of scourge? Next,” Pocan posted on X.

Progressive groups MoveOn and the Progressive Change Campaign Committee have also called on Schumer to step down from his post as minority leader.
